Soft Water – Important Health Advice on the Effects of Softening Water

Softening water is often very helpful as it has a number of benefits, in particular reducing scale build-up and sometimes improving the taste. However, softening it also has a certain effects on human health and also on the environment which are important to consider.

The hard water to be treated passes through a bed of the resin which contains sodium and potassium ions. As the water passes through the resin, the hardness ions are trapped in the resin and replaced by the sodium or potassium ions which are released into the water – effectively softening it. The harder the water is, the more sodium or potassium ions are released from the resin and into the water.

Effect on Humans

For people on a low-sodium diet, the increase in sodium levels (for systems releasing sodium) in the water can be significant, especially when treating very hard water. A paper by Kansas State University gives an example: “A person who drinks two liters (2L) of softened, extremely hard water (assume 30 gpg) will consume about 480 mg more sodium (2L x 30 gpg x 8 mg/L/gpg = 480 mg), than if unsoftened water is consumed.” This is a significant amount, as they state: “The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests that the 3 percent of the population who must follow a severe, salt-restricted diet should not consume more than 500 mg of sodium a day. AHA suggests that no more than 10 percent of this sodium intake should come from water. The draft guideline of 20 mg/L for water protects people who are most susceptible.”

Effect on Environment

Over time the resins gradually lose their effectiveness and must be regenerated by passing a concentrated brine solution through them. Most of the salt used for regeneration gets flushed out of the system and may be released into the soil or sewer. This process can be damaging to the environment, especially in arid regions. Some jurisdictions prohibit such release and require users to dispose of the spent brine at an approved site or to use a commercial service company.

Most water softener manufacturers provide metered control valves to minimize the frequency of regeneration. It is also possible on most units to adjust the amount of salt used for each regeneration. Both of these steps are recommended to minimize the impact of water softeners on the environment.

In industrial scale water softening plants, the effluent flow from re-generation process can be very significant. Under certain conditions, such as when the effluent is discharged in admixture with domestic sewage, the calcium and magnesium salts may precipitate out as hardness scale on the inside of the discharge pipe. This can build up to such an extent so as to block the pipe as happened on a major industrial plant in Australia in the 1980s. I certainly would not want to be the person who had to clean that pipe!

To Sum Up

Although there are benefits to softening water, there are also consequences that must be taken into account, both human and environmental as discussed above. In my opinion, the benefits of softening probably outweigh the disadvantages as long as one is aware that it does directly effect the quality of the water and consequently the minerals it contains. People who must have strict control over their diet (particularly their sodium intake) need to be aware of this. Also, domestic water softening devices are very useful in preventing the hardness minerals which are removed causing hard water stains and limescale problems. They also do not have a significant impact on the environment compared to the much larger sized devices that are employed in industry.

Patrick Henry BEng (Hons), is a recognised industry expert in removing hard water stains. With an honours degree in Chemical Engineering, he teaches people how to remove stubborn hard water stains and limescale using a step by step guide. He is author of the ebook “Hard Water Stain Removal Secrets Revealed”. Complete information on his popular ebook is available from his web site. Health Advice For Ringing Ears, Blood Pressure Symptoms And Related Issues

by chrisjohnbeckett

If you’re suffering from Ringing Ears Blood Pressure symptoms then know that you’re not alone. Most of us experience this problem sooner or later in life and understand what you’re going through. The name of the ailment that’s causing you grief is Tinnitus and it can be treated in some cases. The medical field is still studying the problem and there are still things we don’t know about it. Typical Ringing Ears Blood Pressure symptoms for this include low level noises that can be ignored over time. Though it can be hard to do sometimes all you can do is just learn to live with the issue. In some cases however the issue may be too problematic to deal with and you may need medical help.

There are many forms of Tinnitus and many noises that a sufferer of Ringing Ears Blood Pressure problems might endure. These range from light popping all the way to intense ringing. There’s also a sound that is not constant but rather sounds in rhythm with your heart rate. This is known as Pulsatile Tinnitus and is one of the rare forms of Ringing Ears Blood Pressure problems. The reasons for this particular problem forming range from poor health to a buildup of bad cholesterol in the circulatory system. Bad cholesterol blocks proper blood flow which can result in hearing abnormal things at random. Fortunately this particular version of the problem can be heard by a medical practitioner when they examine you properly. Do note that a person can suffer from more than one type of Tinnitus at a time.

There are various blood pressure related problems which also go by the name of hypertension disorders. Whether or not they have easily identifiable symptoms differs from person to person. Some people don’t know thy have a problem until they go in for a check up and others show symptoms right away. While there are medications to treat high blood pressure Pulsatile Tinnitus can be a side effect of these medications. If you develop this problem when taking medications for hypertension you should inform your doctor immediately. He or she will then put you on a different medication until one is found that lowers your pressure but also doesn’t cause Tinnitus.

Although Pulsatile Tinnitus can be caused by hypertension it is not the only source of the problem. Being overweight can cause Ringing Ears Blood Pressure problems and can lead to many forms of Tinnitus. Other catalysts for Tinnitus include non cancerous or benign tumors in the arteries that simply constrict proper blood flow. It can also be brought on by infections and other diseases as well. In order to minimize your chances of being stricken with Tinnitus it’s important that you keep yourself in good health. Taking a few minutes out of your schedule to get in some extra walking or a few sets of weight lifting every day can work wonders for your body in the long run.

Tinnitus unfortunately has many causes and can also be a symptom of Ringing Ears Blood Pressure problems. Treating the issue requires that you work with your doctor to identify the particular kind that you have. There are numerous treatment methods available for the problem in general and just trying them at random is not recommended. Some types are brought on by hypertension, some are brought on by medical problems, and others can be brought on by stress. If you suffer from strange noises in your ears that refuse to go away you should always seek out your local doctor. Due to the nature of Pulsatile Tinnitus you should inform your doctor if the problem occurred when you started on medication for hypertension or any pother problem. Failure to do so in a timely manner can result in harming your body and may prolong your risk for other health problems.

Health Advice For A Healthy Vacation

Health advice
by DeathByBokeh

We don’t like to think about getting injured or sick when traveling, but when it happens, being prepared can save your vacation.

It is time to take your family vacation. Your bags are packed, your hotel reservations are confirmed, and the taxi to the airport is waiting, but are you really prepared? Inside your bags do you have all the medications you might need and received the proper inoculations for this trip?

Firstly consider some basic preventative measures. Before going to any destination, the first thing you should do is consult a physician to find out if any inoculations are advised? Malaria stays with you your whole life, and Cholera might kill you, don’t make the mistake in believing you are immune to the bugs that inhabit this world. When planning your trip always assume the best and prepare for the worse. Get those shots, buy your medications and be aware of health warnings in every country you visit.

In some countries immunization is required before you arrive and in such instances, make sure you have your International Certificate of Vaccination. You can get this certificate from your local health department although many physicians can also provide you this form.

But even if you take all the immunization and recommended drugs before and during your travel, keep in mind that you may still become ill if exposed to contaminated water, food or insects. Bugs do mutate so regardless how prepared you became stateside, when visiting your travel location, you must still keep your guard up. Experienced travelers know this and take the trouble to boil water or buy trusted bottled water. They prepare many of their own meals, washing their foods carefully and making sure everything is well cooked. Mosquito netting is a must, preferably a full net for a bed, and a net-hat that covers you head and neck.

But in case you do become ill, make sure you have packed sufficient medical supplies. If you are in need of medications, bring a full supply that will last the entire trip. Medications overseas cannot always be depended on, either because the medication does not exist in that country or because the quality may be significantly different than what you are expecting.

The standards of medicine vary county to county but keep in mind that medical practitioners overseas sometimes don’t need a license and certainly don’t have insurance. ‘Oops’ is not an uncommon word in medical facilities in even many of the developing countries I have visited.

In short, here is my advice. Do your research, get those shots, pack all your medications and by all means, use your intelligence, keep aware, and have a safe and good trip.

Mental Health Disorders: Schizophrenia

September 21, 2010 by

Schizophrenia affects around 1% of the population of this planet. It is a chronic, severe, and disabling mental disorder. It has also been recognized for centuries, maybe not with the same nomenclature, but most likely with the same symptoms. However, the complex mechanisms which cause this condition remain a mystery of their own… but for how long?

History of Schizophrenia: from demons to genes

The symptoms commonly associated with schizophrenia are on the records of many ancient civilizations, such as the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. The causes for this mental disorder have been associated with demons, gods, poisonous substances, dark creatures and more – but until today, there are still no definite answers. There is evidence, however, to the different treatments tested (and used) in several patients. Drilling holes in a patient’s skull and performing dance rituals were some of them.

The term ‘Schizophrenia’ (derived from the Greek words ‘schizo’=split and ‘phrene’=mind) was only created in 1911 by Eugene Bleuler, a Swiss physician. Bleuler changed the term ‘dementia praecox’ created by Emile Kraepelin – the German physician who first classified mental disorders in categories – because the disorder was not a dementia. Later on, both scientists sub-classified schizophrenia into categories based on specific symptoms, three of which were delineated in the DSM-III (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders): disorganized, catatonic, paranoid, residual, and undifferentiated. Kraepelin’s classification remains influential and it is the basis of the DSM-IV.

Nowadays, it is believed that schizophrenia is caused by a mixture of gene interaction and environmental influence. However, it is not clear how much influence each of these causes wields.

The Symptoms

The symptoms of schizophrenia are divided into three categories: positive, negative and cognitive.

Positive symptoms are volatile, easy to recognise and normally involve some loss of contact with reality. Hallucinations (distortions of the human senses), delusions (false personal beliefs) and movement disorders are examples of such symptoms.

Negative symptoms are harder to recognise as they relate to some loss in abilities such as planning, speaking, expressing emotions or being motivated. These symptoms can easily be misconnected to laziness, depression or other conditions which involve similar behaviour. The term is referred as ‘negative’ due to the reductions in ‘normality’ – both emotional and behavioural.

Cognitive symptoms relate to problems in normal cognitive functions. In many cases these cognitive impairments are only detected through neuropsychological tests. Such symptoms include problems with memory, attention, decision-making and more.

The Causes

As previously noted, schizophrenia is believed to be caused by a mixture of gene and environmental influence. Davies stated that “schizophrenia appears to be caused by abnormalities in the development of the brain that become manifest in late adolescence or the early twenties, a time when a differentiation and maturation of the central nervous system is at its most complex” (Davies 2005 p. 210*).

However, the disorder is not characterised by a single predominant gene – it relies on the combination of a group of genes, each exerting a small effect. These gene combinations, along with the presence non-genetic factors such as exposure to viruses or drug abuse, play a key role of increasing vulnerability.

Current research is attempting to identify the genes which could be directly involved with the incidence of schizophrenia and psychotic episodes. There are candidate genes – however there is not enough evidence to prove that these genes in fact increase risk. “Some genes that have recently been associated with schizophrenia code for enzymes and proteins that help brain cells communicate with each other.

Some of these enzymes and proteins are involved in neurotransmitter systems that have long been implicated in schizophrenia, such as dopamine, glutamate and GABA. Other genes code for proteins involved in the brain development, while others code for proteins of yet undetermined function”. (NIMH – National Institute of Mental Health**).

Facts and the treatments

Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling disorder, but nevertheless misinterpreted by the general population. In fact, between 25 and 40% of people who experience a psychotic episode not only recover, but never experience a second episode. In many instances, patients enter hospital care voluntarily, and are able to function normally when not experiencing an episode. Although people with schizophrenia are more likely to attempt suicide, they are not particularly prone to violence or crimes.

Over the last few years, new anti-psychotic medications have been developed – such as clozapine, risperidone and olanzapine. These drugs do not cure schizophrenia, but they effectively alleviate its symptoms and extrapyramidal side effects (such as rigidity, muscle spasms and tremors) which used to appear in older drug treatments.

Psychosocial treatment is also important in the management of schizophrenia. Rehabilitation and substance abuse treatment are helpful in integrating the patient to the society, and improving the patient’s capability to counteract the degenerative effects of the disease. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) can also help. This treatment seems to be effective in reducing the severity of symptoms and decreasing the risk of relapse in patients which symptoms persist even when they take medication.

Furthermore, the efficacy of treatment can be vastly improved with the participation of family and friends. Because the positive symptoms of this mental illness are easy to distinguish, both patient and relatives are able to act when noticing the prevalence of different behaviour.

Overcoming schizophrenia: too far or too close?

The future of schizophrenia runs parallel to most research in mental health. With the advent of new brain mapping and scanning technologies, such as PET, MRI, fMRI and the developments in genetic research – scientists are narrowing their focus to the interaction between neurons and how each of our cognitive functions affect neurotransmission at a molecular level. With this in hand, there are expectations that the approach to schizophrenia will be more specific and efficient – but to predict cure at this stage, is a long shot.

Nevertheless, there may be more excitement in the other side of the spectrum. Identifying the exact gene combination which increases the incidence of this condition, and the role of non-genetic factors, may still seem distant. However, another solution could effectively help the vast population suffering from the symptoms of schizophrenia.

The general thinking is that the best way to combat an illness is to develop a cure. What about instead of finding the cure, combating the symptoms? That is the approach used for most illnesses which cure is yet to be discovered, and it could be a temporary solution to improve the lives of millions. Cognitive enhancers, such as nootropics (cited in a previous edition of this ezine) and cognitive enhancing methods – such as the use of electric waves in specific brain regions – could counteract some of the debilitating symptoms of schizophrenia.

Most of these techniques are still being tested, but they are much closer to reality and have already predictions to reach the market within a few years. Although there have been some studies in cognitive enhancing drugs, new drug classes are on the scene – and brain science and pharmacology are allowing further discoveries in the field. What will be the next step? That might not be the one million dollar question, but perhaps it holds the answer which over 65 million people have been waiting for.

What You Need to Know About Self Employed Health Insurance

September 9, 2010 by

Finding health insurance can be a challenging process if you are self employed. Many small business owners and self employed individuals do not  consider purchasing there own health insurance. There are affordable health insurance options available for the self employed from top health insurance companies.

No one who is self employed should go without a major medical plan from a top rated health insurance company. When considering a health insurance plan you will need to determine what kind of coverage you want.

There are many options available to protect your self and your business from the financial risk of an accident or major illness, but they are not all equal. Some companies have very limited benefits that will not be much help in your time of need. That is why we recommend selecting a top rated health insurance company for your self employed health insurance needs.

The question you want to ask yourself is: am I able to risk purchasing health insurance that is cheap from some off-brand company I have never heard of?

It is not worth risking financial disaster to save 50-100 dollars per month because, if the so called insurance does not cover what you thought it would not only will you have to pay for the medical bill you have also lost the money you spent on the insurance. Even if you cannot afford to spend much on health insurance it is better to have a high deductible plan with a major health carrier that you can afford then it is to go without or purchase a limited plan.

Below is what all self employed people must understand when considering health insurance:

Co-pay:  Is a fixed amount you must pay at the time for service for a doctor office visit or a prescription.

Deductible: Is a flat amount that you must pay before the insurance will pay any benefits

Coinsurance: Is the percentage of your bill that will be paid by the insurance company AFTER the deductible is met.

Out of Pocket Maximum: Is the most you will have to pay AFTER the deductible.

Does the health insurance have any limitations, exclusions,  or waiting periods for services?

In the begining of this year , the most imoportant wish for everybody is healthy. And, if you do want to be health , then please never smok. There are many reasons for it.

A new study confirms that smoking raises a person’s risks of the major forms of esophageal and stomach cancers, while drinking has more narrow effects.

In a study that followed more than 120,000 Dutch adults for 16 years, researchers found that smoking increased the risk of the two main forms of stomach cancer, as well as the two forms of esophageal cancer — by anywhere from 60 percent to 263 percent versus non-smokers.

The findings, published in the journal Gut, underscore general health recommendations to drink only in moderation and to quit, or preferably never start, smoking.

In addition, they also suggest that smoking and drinking cannot account for the changing face of esophageal and stomach cancers in Western countries, according to Jessie Steevens of Maastricht University in the Netherlands and co-investigators.

Less smoking , more healthy, more happy !

After John Elway dies and enters the Pearly Gates, God takes him on a tour. He shows John a little two-bedroom house with a faded Broncos banner hanging from the front porch. “This is your house, John. Most people don’t get their own houses up here,” God says.

John looks at the house, then turns around and looks at the one sitting on top of the hill. It’s a huge two-story mansion with white marble columns and little patios under all the windows. Wisconsin flags line both sides of the sidewalk and a huge Green Bay Packers banner hangs between the marble columns.

“Thanks for the house, God, but let me ask you a question. I get this little two-bedroom house with a faded banners and Brett Favre gets a mansion with brand new Packers banners and flags flying all over the place. Why is that?”

God looks at him seriously for a moment, then with a smile, God says, “That’s not Favre’s house, it’s mine.”

Health Insurance Plans Benefits

September 2, 2010 by

Purchasing an insurance plan is important for anyone out there today. Irregardless of whether you are still single or whether you already have a family, if you do not have health insurance coverage then you are asking for debt related issues.

Medical bills are the number one cause for people’s financial problems. Likewise they are often reported as being the number one cause of someone filing for bankruptcy. The costs associated with medical bills; especially those from the emergency room can be great. If your employer offers this coverage and you fail to accept it, you may find that some day you are in need of it and wished that you had signed up. In the event that your employer does not offer it, you do not need to worry because there are many options out there that you can choose from. However, before you go and select any particular insurer, you need to know the facts about health insurance plans so that you can make a well-informed decision regarding which one to choose.

There are many different types of health insurance plans to choose from. Some of these are only designed for emergency room visits while others are more comprehensive and cover basic and routine checkups among many other things. Keep in mind though, that as with any other type of insurance, the more comprehensive it is, the more the monthly payments will be. You will need to make a determination as to how much coverage you want and how much you are willing to spend as this will help to narrow down the possibilities.

Most health insurance plans also include what is known as a pre-existing condition clause which basically means that if you have a condition which developed or surfaced prior to signing up for the plan, they may or may not cover it depending upon your local laws. This is very important to look for because this can be something as simple as a stubbed toe or as complicated as cancer.

Above all else, when it comes time to actually choose the plan that you will be getting, you have to compare the choices. Take the time to find competing insurers and their similar plans so you can determine what exactly you are getting and for how much from each insurer. Then go through all of them comparing the pros and cons associated with the individual plans before finally making your selection. Do not forget that many companies will require you to undergo a checkup before you can avail the plan.

Take the time to search the internet for the best health insurance quotes that you can find on many insurance companies websites.

When you take the time to properly determine which health insurance plan is right for you and your particular situation you will find that finding the most appropriate plan will be a simpler task. In the end, your goal should be to always have the proper health insurance overage for you and your family.
