Medication Strategies During Pregnancy

When you’re pregnant, you want to do everything you can to protect your baby. If you have a cold, a headache or heartburn, is it safe to take an over-the-counter (OTC) remedy?

No one can say for sure that a medication is safe to use while you’re pregnant. But, avoiding medicines may not be a good idea, either. It may be wiser to treat an illness than ignore it.

Doctor knows best

When you find out you’re pregnant, “check with your doctor before deciding to take — or stop taking — medicine,” says Karen Filkins, M.D., a clinical practitioner of obstetrics and gynecology. “Together, you can weigh the risks and benefits and decide what to do.”

Planning ahead is even better. “If you’re thinking about becoming pregnant, ask your doctor for a list of medicines that are safe to take. Or, do so as soon as you know you’re expecting,” says Dr. Filkins.

Read labels

Medications sold in the United States are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA also ranks them on how safe they are during pregnancy. Warnings for pregnant women may be on the packaging. But some products haven’t been thoroughly evaluated for risks during pregnancy because it would be unethical to do so. Even without a warning, risks may exist. This also is true for herbal products and dietary supplements, which are not regulated by the FDA.

If your doctor says it’s OK to take an OTC medication, follow his or her instructions about how much to take and how often.

OTC drugs to avoid

More than 80 percent of pregnant women take medication, including OTC remedies. Ask your health care provider about the following, which are usually off-limits:

Aspirin. This non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) has been associated with a higher risk of bleeding, low-birth-weight babies and problems during delivery. It also may cause problems when trying to conceive.
Ibuprofen, ketoprofen, indomethacin and naproxen. These NSAIDs usually aren’t recommended in the third trimester. They have been linked with a higher risk of some fetal heart problems. They may cause problems with conception and may raise the risk for miscarriage.
Guaifenesin. Avoid this common ingredient in cough medicine during the first trimester. One study showed that it may increase the risk for neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, although other studies failed to confirm this.
Nizatidine. This medicine for heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease has been linked to problems with pregnancies in animals. More studies relating to pregnant women are needed.

Don’t assume you need to suffer through symptoms because you’re expecting a baby. Ask your provider about ways to get relief.

What about maintenance medications?

Pregnancy poses special challenges if you have a chronic condition such as asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure. Managing medications may be one of them. It’s smart to see your provider before conceiving so you can plan ahead.

In some cases, sticking with your current treatment regimen may be the best idea. For example, controlling your blood glucose levels if you have diabetes may reduce your risk of miscarriage. And, keeping asthma or high blood pressure in check during pregnancy can help prevent problems with the baby. Other drug therapies may need to be fine-tuned. Perhaps a lower dose of the medication or another drug is an option.

Whatever you do, don’t stop taking medicine on your own. Discuss your medication and your pregnancy with your obstetrician first. Your doctor will help you weigh any risks and benefits. If medication helps you stay healthy, it may be the best choice for you and your baby.

Advice on Keeping Fit and Healthy over Summer

Medical Advice
by juhansonin

Heatstroke is the most common Summer hazard, caused when your body has difficulty in cooling itself down. During a heatstroke, sufferers stop sweating and can become delirious, lose consciousness, and faint. Other symptoms of heatstroke include extremely high body temperatures and short and rapid breathing. Heatstroke can lead to serious complications and the victim may die if not treated in time.

Victims of heatstroke need immediate medical attention. To help prevent it, always wear a hat and light clothing when you are in the sun. Drink plenty of water and in general avoid engaging in physical activity in the sun. Take on water before you feel thirsty. Once you feel a thirst, you’re already dehydrated. Try eating more fruit such as grapes, watermelon, bananas and pineapple as all these fruits contain high water levels and sugars.

Consumption of fruits and juices reduces body heat and helps to control body temperature.
SkincareGoing out in the sun without protecting your skin is an invitation to trouble. To prevent your skin from getting burnt and to retain your original skin complexion, never go out without applying sunscreen lotion.

During summer, ultraviolet rays are more intense and can damage your skin in a short space of time. There are many sunscreen lotions available. Choose the one that suits your skin type. The most common and effective sunscreen lotions contain SPF level 15 or above. Remember to reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours and if swimming reapply after coming out of the water.

Lack of skincare and excess exposure to the sun causes sunburn. The skin swells up and turns red in colour. There is a burning and itching sensation. In extreme cases, blisters are formed. As the skin heals, the outer cover will start peeling off.

Sunburn is caused due to exposure to ultraviolet rays. Therefore, using a sunscreen lotion will protect the skin from sunburn too. If you have sensitive skin, it is advisable not to go out in the sun between 12 noon and 5 in the evening. An additional precaution is to use an umbrella to guard you from the direct sun rays.

Sensitive skin is highly prone to skin allergies or rashes during Summer. The slightest irritation caused by sun rays, chemicals or even dust can cause allergies. If you are prone to allergies, even after taking necessary precautions, consult a dermatologist.

Chlorine is not good for your skin, hair and nails leaving them dry, brittle and flaky. It adds an additional load to your body – another chemical for your body to assimilate and eliminate.Wash off chlorine as soon as you step out of a swimming pool or hot tub.

Prickly HeatPrickly heat is an uncomfortable condition of the skin which is caused by excess sweating and exposure to direct heat. The skin turns red in colour, causing a prickling sensation. The dead skin cells and bacteria block the pores of the sweat glands. This results in irritation and eruption of tiny spots or blisters.

To prevent prickly heat, avoid wearing extra tight clothes. Wear loose cotton clothes. If you are wearing any other material, make sure that the fabric can breathe air. Avoid wearing silk and lycra during Summer. Take regular baths and make an extra effort to clean armpits and other areas of skin folds, use an anti-bacterial soap and avoid moisturiser and heavy make-up.

Hay FeverHay fever season for many people occurs during the Summer months. Whilst not completely unavoidable, there are actions that can be taken to reduce suffering in addition to over-the-counter medicines.

There are certain times of the day when pollen levels are at their highest. Generally, the pollen counts peak at between 9am and 12pm. Then they lower until about 5pm when they rise until about 7pm, try to avoid being outside during these periods. Start each day with a bath or shower to remove any pollen which may have settled on your body during the night. Eat a good breakfast including fresh fruit, rich in vitamin C. A healthy breakfast will help the body’s natural immune system to fight the effects of hay fever. Similarly at lunchtime, eat healthily, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoid junk foods like chips and burgers. When returning home from work, changing your clothes and washing will help remove any pollen you have picked up during the day.

By around 8pm most of the pollen will have settled on the ground, and this is often the most comfortable time of the day for hay fever sufferers. If you still feel a bit stuffy, try a face sauna. Fill a bowl with hot water, put a towel over your head, then hold your face over the steam and breathe. If you are tired the symptoms can become much worse, so get a regular amount of sleep each night. Again, this will help your body’s natural immune system fight the symptoms.

Eye CareUltraviolet rays will not only damage your skin but will also damage your eyes, which could lead to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. So don’t forget to wear sunglasses that filter out 100% of ultraviolet light to protect your eyes.

Insect BitesAlthough insect bites and stings occur all year round, they are more prevalent during the Summer months. In the UK, bites can come from midges, gnats, mosquitoes, flies, fleas, mites, ticks and bedbugs. Saliva in these insects can react with the skin and cause inflammation, pain and itching. Insect stings from wasps, bees and hornets involve venom injected into the skin. This will cause a burning sensation and swelling which can be soothed with a cream or spray. Although uncommon, some people are allergic to stings. If you have an allergic reaction to stings you should seek medical advice.

Food PoisoningSummer is a time of picnics and barbecues, and these involve bringing food out into the open where it can stay warm too long. Avoid an outbreak of food poisoning this Summer by following simple guidelines about food safety and food handling. Being aware of the food temperature and applying common sense will prevent you and your friends and family from coming down with a food-borne illness.
EHIC Cards

If you are going on holiday or a business trip, you should apply for a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If travelling through the EU, the EHIC Card entitles you to state-provided medical treatment at reduced cost or sometimes free, if you become ill or have an accident during your stay.
The EHIC Card also covers:• Treatment for long-term and existing illnesses, such as dialysis for kidney disease, and• Routine maternity care.

Each country’s healthcare system is slightly different, so your EHIC Card may not cover everything that would be free on the NHS. Many countries expect patients to pay towards their treatment but you may be able to claim the money back. For further information visit www.nhs.uk.

If you have been trying to loose your weight for quite sometime but have not met with much success then it is time for you to seek a doctor’s help and start a medical weight loss program. Many factors can make you look for medical help. For e.g., if you have just had a baby and want to shed the excess fat, starting this program is a good idea.

Proper Food Intake

1. Eat right and watch the weight go:  A dietician can plan out a diet chart based on the calories required by your body. You lose weight when the amount of calories you intake is less than the calories your body burns in order to maintain itself. It is usually recommended in medical weight loss programs that one should reduce intake of processed foods and increase the amount of fiber intake. If your body is in proper shape, then you would also look younger. Banana, watermelon, milk and loupes are some of the fruits and drinks that are highly essential in shedding extra weight.

2. Surgery for weight loss is no more required:  Surgery is no more an ultimate option for losing weights anymore. The weight loss programs are carried out in such a way that it suits our life style and also helps in reducing extra pounds without the aid of surgery. Apples, raspberries, flaxseeds, walnuts, pinto beans, prunes, raisins, cranberry are some of the essential natural food materials that helps in medical weight loss programs and are suggested by doctors in medical clinics. It is advised to have more and more fresh vegetables and fruits. One is recommended to drink at least 10 glasses of water every day and do not take alcohol in various medical weight loss programs.

3. Taking a physician’s opinion for achieving your desired weight is a good idea because medical weight loss programs are the right choice that ensures you lose weight and also keep the weight off permanently. Some of the foods suggested by the doctor are brown rice, wheat germ, lentils, and grains like quinoa, brown rice and many more. Soy products such as tofu also help in losing weight.

The medical weight loss programs make sure that the means by which you are losing weight is healthy and thus wards off harmful side-effects. Therefore, this program can become your ticket to a healthy and fit life.

Soft Water – Important Health Advice on the Effects of Softening Water

October 26, 2010 by

Health advice
by Tattooed JJ

Softening water is often very helpful as it has a number of benefits, in particular reducing scale build-up and sometimes improving the taste. However, softening it also has a certain effects on human health and also on the environment which are important to consider.

The hard water to be treated passes through a bed of the resin which contains sodium and potassium ions. As the water passes through the resin, the hardness ions are trapped in the resin and replaced by the sodium or potassium ions which are released into the water – effectively softening it. The harder the water is, the more sodium or potassium ions are released from the resin and into the water.

Effect on Humans

For people on a low-sodium diet, the increase in sodium levels (for systems releasing sodium) in the water can be significant, especially when treating very hard water. A paper by Kansas State University gives an example: “A person who drinks two liters (2L) of softened, extremely hard water (assume 30 gpg) will consume about 480 mg more sodium (2L x 30 gpg x 8 mg/L/gpg = 480 mg), than if unsoftened water is consumed.” This is a significant amount, as they state: “The American Heart Association (AHA) suggests that the 3 percent of the population who must follow a severe, salt-restricted diet should not consume more than 500 mg of sodium a day. AHA suggests that no more than 10 percent of this sodium intake should come from water. The draft guideline of 20 mg/L for water protects people who are most susceptible.”

Effect on Environment

Over time the resins gradually lose their effectiveness and must be regenerated by passing a concentrated brine solution through them. Most of the salt used for regeneration gets flushed out of the system and may be released into the soil or sewer. This process can be damaging to the environment, especially in arid regions. Some jurisdictions prohibit such release and require users to dispose of the spent brine at an approved site or to use a commercial service company.

Most water softener manufacturers provide metered control valves to minimize the frequency of regeneration. It is also possible on most units to adjust the amount of salt used for each regeneration. Both of these steps are recommended to minimize the impact of water softeners on the environment.

In industrial scale water softening plants, the effluent flow from re-generation process can be very significant. Under certain conditions, such as when the effluent is discharged in admixture with domestic sewage, the calcium and magnesium salts may precipitate out as hardness scale on the inside of the discharge pipe. This can build up to such an extent so as to block the pipe as happened on a major industrial plant in Australia in the 1980s. I certainly would not want to be the person who had to clean that pipe!

To Sum Up

Although there are benefits to softening water, there are also consequences that must be taken into account, both human and environmental as discussed above. In my opinion, the benefits of softening probably outweigh the disadvantages as long as one is aware that it does directly effect the quality of the water and consequently the minerals it contains. People who must have strict control over their diet (particularly their sodium intake) need to be aware of this. Also, domestic water softening devices are very useful in preventing the hardness minerals which are removed causing hard water stains and limescale problems. They also do not have a significant impact on the environment compared to the much larger sized devices that are employed in industry.

Patrick Henry BEng (Hons), is a recognised industry expert in removing hard water stains. With an honours degree in Chemical Engineering, he teaches people how to remove stubborn hard water stains and limescale using a step by step guide. He is author of the ebook “Hard Water Stain Removal Secrets Revealed”. Complete information on his popular ebook is available from his web site. TNA, The Facial Pain Association: Trigeminal neuralgia and other nerve-related facial pains affect people of all ages in every part of the world, constituting a silent epidemic that needs to be brought before the public. Frequent misdiagnosis results in high treatment costs, painful delays in finding expert help, personal and family stress, loss of time at work or school and disrupted social life. Suicide is well documented among patients who gave up on finding a way to stop or significantly relieve their excruciating, repetitive pain. Many patients have hopscotched from doctor to doctor, or dentist to doctor, and undergone multiple treatments with little or no impact on their pain. In some cases, inappropriate treatment has worsened the pain, causing confusion, anxiety and anger. Tips and Tricks About Acid Reflux

October 23, 2010 by

Although acid reflux is not a life threatening condition, the pain that this brings can be unbearable sometimes. So to relief the pain is very important in this condition, maybe as important as getting it treated.

Furthermore, it is also believed that this is a lifelong condition, so reliving one’ s pain can be very important. But if you want to do this, make sure to do it the proper way. Taking too much medication can sometimes hurt more than do any good. What you should do is talk to a specialist and explore your options.

Also an important thing when suffering from acid reflux is to maintain a balance when your helath is concerned. If you take too much medication to relief you from the pain that acid reflux can give you, other parts of your body can be harmed. So make sure you discuss all this with your doctor, because the right chemical balance in your body is essential.

Many doctors do not encourage their patients to take pills for acid reflux relief. The reason this happens is because all that these drugs do is reduce the quantity of acid produced by your stomach. You may think this is a good thing, because then you suffer from less pain and you can also cure acid reflux. Wrong! The stomach acid is very important in digestion. This component breaks down the food we eat into smaller pieces giving us all the nutrients and vitamins we need. If you level of acid is low, than you may have serious problems.

The most used substance in acid reflux problems is the antacid. This helps remove all the unnecessary acids in your stomach, therefor making you avoid acid rfelux. Well, as good as it sound on paper, it is not so great in practice. What this substance actually does is reduce acid reflux, not cure it. Even more it can also make it difficult for your stomach to digest some types of foods or different amounts of what you eat. It can go as far as not allowing your body to proper asimilate iron or even vitamin B.

In theory and even in some cases this substance works. But there are more things wrong with it than you might think. It can actually reduce your stomach’ s ability to fight eny infection that may happen in that part of your body. It weakens the stomach walls, leading to even more problems than you had before. This is the reason way you should consult a doctor and together find the best treatment for you.

Halitosis Medications That May Help Solve Bad Breath

October 22, 2010 by

Anyone that has ever found themselves in the unfortunate position of having bad breath may well have asked their doctor or dentist for halitosis medication. Unfortunately there is not really one ‘cure all’ that will solve every case of this all too embarrassing problem.

There are some substances however that have shown positive results when it comes to reducing the anaerobic bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath. This article examines two of these substances that are commonly used in products pitched as medication for halitosis.

The first substance is called Chlorhexidine. Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial agent that can help reduce the smell of bad breath as it destroys the bacteria that often cause it. Chlorhexidine is used in many oral care health products as well as products for skin care.

When buying a mouthwash to fight bad breath it is better to look for one that contains an antibacterial agent like Chlorhexidine rather than alcohol as this would only dry the mouth out and create a worse problem.

Chlorine dioxide is another substances used as a halitosis medication. It has been claimed that the use of a chlorine dioxide mouthwash following tongue scraping eliminated halitosis for 99% of over 600 people involved in a trial by Periodontist, Dr. Jon L. Ricter.

Chlorine dioxide is an oxidising agent used in the water purification process but can also help reduce halitosis by oxidising the mouth and making it a much less welcoming place for the uninvited anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath.

One final note before you buy any halitosis medication online or anywhere else. Please do not consider this article as medical advice. Be sure to consult with your doctor or dentist before using any medication for halitosis or anything else for that matter. These professionals can help you by offering advice specific to your exact situation and needs.

Worried About Bad Breath? – Did you know halitosis medications can help or hinder when trying to eliminate this embarreassing problem:? Here’s Why.

The Thyroid Gland Claims Victims

October 19, 2010 by

It is of a small shape and strategically placed at the bottom of the neck. Made of two lobes and an isthmus, that connects the two parts, the thyroid gland is claiming more and more victims each year. Most of us don’t even know what it’s purpose is and many more do not even know they have problems regarding it. Statistics show that only in some countries alone the people who unknowingly suffer from thyroid problems are more than half. As small as it may be, this gland is of enormous importance.Through the help of the thyroid, we grow and our metabolism develops normally. This happens because the butterfly shaped gland produces hormones, vital in our life.

Young people and older ones may be affected from these thyroid problems. There is not yet a statistic to show us which segment of the population is more affected by the thyroid diseases. So check ups should be done regardless of the age.

Another aspect lots don’t know is that almost 40 percent of a country’s population suffer from thyroid problems and worse, don’t even know that. It is believed that more than 11 percent of the planet’s population suffers from thyroid gland problems. Can you fully imagine what that means? So you see, as small as it may be, this gland is at the top of the list where health problems are concerned.

What is even more disturbing is the fact that lots of helath problems found in people today come from this little gland.
